Today in Wales we celebrate St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers.
Gwyl Santes Dwynwen hapus.
After an ill-fated romance with Prince Maelon (who was then turned into ice), Dwynwen fled into the wilderness. In her solitude she prayed, and was granted three wishes: that Prince Maelon be thawed out; that she would never want to marry again; and that God would help other lovers on her behalf.
All Dwynwen’s wishes were granted, and in return, she devoted her life to God and founded a convent on Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey.
As well as looking after the hearts of humans, she is the patron saint of sick and injured animals.
